The curse of Facebook

In today’s society, Social media has become a very controversial topic of discussion that is rising world widely and in a rapid way. social media has become one of the most widespread communication means and information sharing, in addition to being an essential part of everyday life for tons of people including all ages. There are various social media platforms, but Facebook is one of the largest online social media platforms as the majority of people are using it, moreover, people argued that Facebook is a blessing, however it proved that it is a curse to our society, as it not only isolate people, but also fake their identities.

Facebook is a social media platform which drives its users to a total social isolation. Nowadays the majority of people are accepting the idea of interacting and communicating with their friends and families throughout a text on Facebook as an alternative to the face to face interaction although they are not even comparable. Furthermore, Facebook is destroying the bridges that connects people to each other, because even when people gather, everyone’s attention is glued to the screen to check the latest updates and they are mentally isolated, however they are physically present. In Addition, Facebook is faking people’s identities and is creating false images of them as users get manipulated by photos and updates which give them the impression that everyone is living a much better life than they are. Not many people share their lives on Facebook, and this can affect them in a negative way as they get more envious, frustrated and have lower self-esteem than more involved users (Miller, 2017).

Other people argued that Facebook lend a helping hand in keeping in touch with your friends and family that live far away from you. No matter how many miles you are separated from each other you still can be connected and know each other’s new updates throughout a Facebook message, video call, or even an updated status on their timeline. Moreover, people debated that Facebook is not a tool of showing of, Facebook makes the users express themselves and share their new updates with their friends in a very simple status or a photo on their timeline in order to share with their friends a new outfit, a new trip, or even a new food experience (Belli, 2014).

Tough some may argue that Facebook is a blessing as it connects people to each other and aids in expressing themselves, the negative effects still outweighs the positive ones, as according to Amatenstein (2019) , Studies suggest that using Facebook and other apps in order to keep in touch with friends and family for hours will let you use the social media as a substitute for real connection, thus ,your feelings of loneliness and isolation will likely worsen. Moreover, as the Telegraph Reporters mentioned in 2015, that the increase of social media and faking the perfect lives has been cited in recent studies as a causing to the increased number of people who are feeling pressured, insecure, and depressed just because they are not living perfect life as portrayed on Facebook.

Finally, it can be concluded that social media is one of the most effective, yet dangerous tools of communication and it can be said that Facebook as a social media platform is a double-edged sword , as it can benefit the society and destroy it at the same time, however it is crystal clear that the negative effects of Facebook is taking precedence over its positive effects , as Facebook is seen as the humble brag platform that fakes the perfect lives for its users and is a main reason of social isolation , depression , and insecurity of the majority.

Negative effects of Facebook on Teenagers

Nowadays Social media has expanded and it became very important to everyone. “There are 7.7 billion people in the world, with at least 3.5 billion online, which means that social media platforms are used by one in three people in the world, and more than two thirds of all the internet users. “(Ospina, 2019). Hence, it has changed the whole world, as it changed how people think, talk, behave and act. There are a lot of social media platforms such as Twitter, YouTube, WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook etc.… According to Ospina (2019) “With 2.3 billion users, Facebook is the most popular social media platform today.” Hence, Facebook has a huge negative impact on people.

Facebook is a powerful tool that can be very harmful for teenagers, as it is a method to spread information, which offers a broad range of choices and opinions. Facebook can grow many psychological disorder such as being anti social, anxious and depressed as teens choose to spend their time checking Facebook rather than going out. According to Ehmke (n.d) a survey that was made in which they asked teenagers between the age of 14-19 years in the UK how Facebook affected their health and wellbeing and found out that it increased their feelings of anxiety, loneliness and depression. Hence, too much Facebook is mentally unhealthy, as it gives the opportunity for people to judge everyone, spread rumors, get in politics and read different points of view which will cause a mental breakdown for the teens, not only that, but it also let to feeling unsatisfied with their own bodies, life and how they look.

People argued that Facebook is not harmful for the mental health as it let teenagers make new friends, let families and friends connect together, and learning new things. As Facebook is a huge platform that has many users so it is easy to meet new people and make new friendships, not only that, but it also let family members connect with each others easily. “Social Media and especially Facebook also gives teenagers the probability to develop their social circle and develop new friendships and develop awareness about society and the world.” (Akram & Kumar, 2017).

Some people claim that Facebook has positive impacts on teenagers, however it affects their mental health negatively. “Meanwhile, 17% of the respondents to the made survey, feel that Facebook harms relationships and result in less meaningful human interactions, not only that, but also some people think Facebook distorts reality and gives teens an unrealistic view of other people’s lives (15%), or that teens spend too much time on.” (Anderson & Jiang, 2018). Moreover, Facebook affects teenagers in a very negative way it makes them talk less offline, which means that it is very hard for them to socialize in real life, not only that but it also let them hate their life as they see other people happy pictures while which is most of the time fake. Facebook also opens the door for spreading rumors and bullying which affect the teenager’s mental health.

To conclude it all, no one can deny the importance of social media in our life as it became the place where people spend most of their time there, but not every important thing is good for our mental health. Facebook let teenager make new friends and let them connect with their families, but it also affects teenager’s life in a very negative way as they are living in an unrealistic world, which causes psychological disorder to the teenagers when they face real life or being exposed to any kind of bullying online. Many of the teenagers nowadays are anti social, and face anxiety and depression because of seeing others living a better life, or being bullied.

Facebook’s positive effect on one’s life

“There are 3.5 billion active social media users worldwide in 2019” (Vojinovic, 2019). The usage of social media is increasing every day and more people are getting attracted to the different social media platform. Social media has been so common in the past decade, and hopefully people are benefiting more from it each and every day. “Facebook is the largest social media network on the Internet, both in terms of total number of users and  name recognition” (Akram & Kumar, 2017). Facebook is becoming the largest mean in social media.  It has always been debatable that Facebook’s impact on the people can be harmful and might affect people’s lives negatively; on the other hand, some believe that Facebook is the most important method to reach the public. Nowadays, it can clearly be seen that Facebook is beneficial in terms of being fast, accessible, and free for venting your problems.

Facebook is the fastest method that spreads the news and events among the people. The news reaches the people within a blink of an eye, as for the American adults, 68% supported that the news and events pop-up in front of them every now and then (Shearer & Matsa, 2018), as they also added that by reading more news and updates because of the social media, it made them more familiar with what is going on around them. Facebook can be considered as the quickest tool to reach the public. Any agency would love to publish first on the social media platforms, as if one needed to change something written, they can do it instantly; this shows how social media can be easily and rapidly edited without taking much time and effort to be done. People also can reach others fast and interact with them from their place even if they are miles apart from each other.

Moreover, an important benefit of the Facebook’s impact on the people that anything on social media can be easily accessed. In other words, Facebook posts can be reachable by the people at any times and all around the world. News and events that happen around the people can be accessible and people will see news and advertisements whether they want to or not. People can easily access each others profiles and search for something that has been shared years ago as long as it is public. However, according to Nawafleh, Harfoush, Fakhouri, Obiedat, & Rababah (2012) Facebook users can choose their level of privacy to prevent strangers from accessing personal information. This shows that Facebook is even more positive as it lets people search for an event that took place in the past years and it can still be accessible to reach it and see pictures about it, but not something private for someone.

There has been an opposing claim that Facebook make users don’t feel free on Facebook and that others can judge them based on what they write. People even claimed that users’ minds can be changed based on what they see and that they might compare their lives with others, so they will not feel good as much as stress. However, one of the most important positive effects of Facebook on users is that it allows them to express themselves freely. People lately find Facebook as a place to vent their feelings and express their own opinions. Also, it makes expressing their feelings so simple as people share their status updates together without any embarrassments like in the face to face connection. Individuals who choose not to use Facebook are likely to have personalities that differ from those of the Facebook users (Nadkarni & Hofmann, 2011) Therefore, Facebook is a revelation as it offers a platform for anyone to share their opinion and express themselves easily and freely by simply posting on their personal profile at which makes their personality becomes better. In conclusion, to sum up what has been mentioned, one needs to mention that Facebook is the best place to change one’s life to better as it reaches people fast, tends to be more accessible, and lets the people vent their problems easily. People would have better lives if they manage to make time on Facebook and to read more of what is being shared there, so they will know the news and events happening around them, they can easily access the past events, and they could speak themselves out freely.

Negative impact of Facebook on Mental health

Social media is one of the most effective and powerful tools of communication in our world nowadays. It cannot be denied that social media made the world a more opened and connected place and eased the communication between people. There are many different social media platforms for people to express their opinions and thoughts in different fields such as; Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and YouTube. However, it has been proven that social media has many negative effects on people as it is addictive and could be a way to develop and lead to different issues such as; anxiety , low self-esteem , cyberbullying and depression (Stonecioher, 2018).

As social media has a lot of power over people’s minds and influences their daily lives and decisions, it could come with harmful costs. Facebook is one of the most popular and most used social media platform among the youth and adults, people use Facebook for many different purposes. For instance, for sharing news, sharing thoughts on specific topics, expressing ideas and talents. According to Stonecipher (2018), Facebook has many negative effects on the mental health of its users as a study proved that 70% of people suffer from mental health issues caused from the usee of Facebook .For instance, it is an open place for opinions so people could spread judgments on anything which could lead to causing low self-esteem and depression for people who receive negative comments and judgments on their posts or pictures. In addition, Facebook is another platform for people to show off their life updates, their accomplishments so, it could be a way to create stereotypes of how someone should look like or how someone should be living their life (Dolan, 2018).

For many people Facebook was a platform that helped in expressing their feelings freely and communicate better with the opinions of the friends and family as it is as easy and accessible way for all ages to use which leads to an exposure to different opinions and accepting them. Moreover, a lot of people see Facebook as a good place to show their talents and be able to get feedback about their work. In addition, there are some people who post on Facebook to get the attention and support that they don’t get in real life which makes them feel more relevant and increase their self-esteem (Townley, 2019)

There are a lot of people who claim that Facebook has been a source of positivity and support for them and also there are people who claim that when they post pictures or their ideas on Facebook and receive a lot of likes and support they feel encouraged and gain more self-confidence. However, it was proven that Facebook has been a source of depression, anxiety and lack of self-confidence for people who don’t get to express or portray themselves in a positive way and for people who receive negative comments and reacts on their posts as nowadays people are defined by how many likes and comments they would get on their posts and that makes people who receive a smaller amount of love and support that they are failures or they are not good enough. Moreover, it was proven that a lot of people only post the positive things about their lives and leave out the negative ones to create a more favorable image of themselves (Dolan, 2018).

To conclude, even though Facebook has a lot of positive purposes to be used for and as much as it is hard to believe but , Facebook is a platform that created many serious issues. It is a double- edged sword that if is used for seeking attention could turn into a self-destructive method. People should trust that most of what is shown on social media and Facebook does not have to be the reality and that people tend to filter the negativity out of their lives on social media and choose to only show the positive and the bight sides from it and also more awareness should be raised about the consequences that Facebook causes and people should be careful and less aggressive when expressing their opinion.
